How To Healthily Cure A Holiday Hangover
We have all been there. The sun is shining and you spontaneously decide to go our for a drink, one cocktail turns into two, turns into three and the next thing you know you’re waking up feeling a little less than 100%, reminiscing on the times where you felt ‘normal’. Whilst ordering pizza and staying in bed all day watching Netflix may seem like all you can muster the energy for doing so can actually make the hangover worse and leave us feeling groggy for days!
Below we are sharing our go-to healthy hangover cures that will not only make you feel good but give your body exactly what it needs after a night of drinking.
SWITCH THE BACON AND EGGS FOR PROTEIN OATS
We know that when you wake up your soul may be calling for a bacon sandwich at the local cafe (ours does too!), but we recommend switching this for a big bowl of protein oats! Greasy foods can actually slow down the rate that our body is able to break down alcohol meaning we may feel worse for longer. Protein oats are jam packed with ingredients that will help replenish your body of vitamins and also keep you fuller for longer. Oats contain many of the nutrients that alcohol depletes such as magnesium, calcium, b-vitamins and more. The added protein powder is a great way to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce cravings, bananas contain potassium which is going to help soothe your belly and then yummy berries act as an incredible antioxidant.
HYDRATE
One of the biggest affects that alcohol has on the body is dehydration as it causes the kidneys to be unable to absorb as much water as normal. This is what can lead us to feeling sleepy and headache-y. One way to prevent a killer hangover is to remember to sip water throughout the night, we personally love the 1:1 ratio where for every 1 alcoholic drink you have, you also have a glass of water. Now, this isn’t always as easy to remember when the cocktails are flowing so don’t worry. Increasing your daily water intake by 50% is a great way to re-hydrate throughout a hangover. When we drink alcohol we lose electrolytes in our body so opting for coconut water or adding in electrolyte sachets instead of drinking regular water will give you that much needed electrolyte boost and replenish the minerals lost whilst drinking.
SWEAT IT OUT
Waking up after a big night and getting into workout mode may seem virtually impossible but we promise it is going to make the world of difference. Sweating is a form of detox and helps the body get rid of all those unwanted toxin. Agree with your friends to book a HIT class for the next day so that you can hold each other accountable and bond over getting through a hungover workout together, if this really seems like too much try walking or yoga. Getting your steps in outside and breathing in fresh air will automatically get you feeling rejuvenated whilst the twisting postures aid the detox and cleansing process.
GREEN JUICE
Opt for a cold-pressed-juice instead of a fizzy drink. Our go-to morning green juice is celery, lemon, ginger, apple and cucumber. Not only is it packed with essential minerals and vitamins and will help aid the hydration process too! Don’t have a juicer? Don’t worry, there are now plenty of amazing cold-pressed juices available in supermarkets and cafes, make sure when choosing to check the ingredients list and avoid any unnecessary added extras!
GET AN EARLY NIGHT
Nothing is worse than a hangover that lasts a few days, and as we get older the affects can definitely seem to linger. Alcohol affects our sleep patterns as it reduces the amount of REM sleep we get which is why we can feel so tired the next day, not to mention that late nights can also be associated with our drinking habits. Aiming to get to bed an hour or two ahead of your normal schedule can help us move out of a sleep deficit and feel better sooner, meaning that a groggy Monday morning is less likely!
