Cryotherapy and its numerous benefits on our health

A conversion between Simone Doti (Founder and President of Cryovis) and Sveva Clavarino

What is cryovis?

Cryovis is the first electric total body cryotherapy center in Italy. I chose this name from cryos (cold) and vis (strength) force of cold. Cryotherapy also known as “Cold therapy” is one of the oldest therapies in the world. In fact, ice has always been used as the first remedy for muscles pain. In 1980 in Japan, Doctor Toshima Yamauchi began studying full body cold therapy and found the enormous benefits and effects that is has on the human body.

Cryotherapy can be defined to be any treatment that involves the use of freezing temperatures. At Cryovis, one session lasts from 3 to 4 minutes at a temperature of -90 degrees. In our cryotherapy booth, the stimulation of the central nervous system is 30% higher compared to nitrogen therapy of cryosaunas.

At the end of your cryotherapy, we recommend to do at least 10/15 minutes of movement such as: walking, cycling, jogging and stretching to improve vasodilation and blood re-oxygenation. We also advise to perform a complete workout by taking advantage of the energy charge given by the effect of the cryotherapy.

What are the benefits of cryotherapy?

The benefits of cryotherapy are innumerable both for our health and for our aesthetics:

ANTI-RHEUMATIC AGENT and anti-age

Systemic cryotherapy helps us to improve the symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as: fibromyalgia, sclerosis, allergies, dermatitis and acts as a powerful anti-rheumatic agent (treating inflammatory Arthritis). Moreover, it improves our immune defences by increasing the production of T lymphocytes (cells that have a central role in controlling and shaping our immune system response by providing immune-related functions). It improves peripheral circulation in our legs and arms (blood flow distribution in the body), it eliminates water retention and speeds up the healing processes after surgery by promoting wound healing and improving skin elasticity, collagen production and reducing edema (fluid retention in the body’s tissue).

Well-being and sport

It helps to recover quickly after intense physical trainings and it gives to the body a powerful charge of endorphins and dopamine, increasing serotonin and energy levels, acting as an antidepressant effect, reducing stress levels and fatigue. In fact, cryotherapy is used by the worlds sport champions as a natural pre-doping and post-performance recovery method. Cryotherapy also improves insonnia problems by regulating our biological clock, fighting jet lag and helping our body to restore hormonal rhythms (even for women in menopause).

weight loss

Lastly, it is a metabolic accelerator that promotes an increase in anabolic hormones (testosterone, insulin, growth hormone), leading the body to burn more calories.

During a cryotherapy session, what happens to our body?

During a cryotherapy session, the blood flows re-oxygenated to our internal organs and it is enriched with essential nutrients that are vital for our survival as our body feels that we are in an “emergency situation” (given the very cold temperature at which we are exposed). Consequently, our blood then quickly flows in the peripheral nervous system (cranial, spinal and peripheral nerves) regenerating tissues and facilitating recovery.

Could you explain us how cryotherapy helps you lose weight?

Cryotherapy is a metabolic accelerator that promotes the increase of hormones that affect our metabolism and thus, triggers our thermoregulation (process that allows our organism to maintain its body temperature), making us burn more calories, promoting weight loss. Only one session of cryotherapy can make you burn up to 900 Kcal.

How many times should cryotherapy be done per week / month?

For a healthy lifestyle, we recommend to do 2/3 sessions per week for one month, three times a year (24 sessions per year). We then suggest to do one session per week all year round (52 sessions per year) in order to continue to see and feel the benefits of Cryotherapy.

Is the cryoTHERAPY suitable for everyone or are there some parameters / ages to respect?

Cryotherapy is suitable for everyone except for people who have severe cardiovascular diseases. There are no contraindications in doing it every day, even for several times throughout the day.

Where can I have cryo therapy sessions in Italy and abroad?

In Italy, few of us have and offer electric total body cryotherapy in Milan and Rome, while London, Paris and USA are a little more widespread. Cryovis is currently based in Milan and you can book your tailor-made cryotherapy appointment through our app. We take your measurements, body fat, age, sex, bone mass, metabolism rate and according to your lifestyle, we then calculate the level of cold temperature that is best for you. Currently, in collaboration with The Wellness Reporter we offer a special discount rate on every service that we have.
