Why Should We Be Changing Our Diets With Seasons

With lighter mornings and warmer temperatures, our lifestyles begin to change. We are up earlier, we are outside more, our wardrobe and skin routines change and with all of this seasonal changes, so should our diet regimes change too. This is because, in order to ensure that we intake the correct amount of: vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are needed to support our immune system, we need to eat the most fresh fruits and vegetables.

In fact, we live in a world where the seasonality of fruit and vegetables has somewhat gone out the window. We can now enjoy avocados all year-round and even enjoy “summer berries” in the bleak of winter. Eating with the seasons is beneficial to our gut health, which as our second brain, can have incredible impacts on our overall wellbeing.

As we move from Mid-June to Mid-July we enter what the Ayurveda practice of Ritucharaya calls the “Grisham Ritucharya” which is a time when fire and air energies dominate the season and increase within our body. We should therefore, focus on eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, enjoy light, cold, mineral-rich foods, leafy greens and make sure to stay hydrated and enjoy a lot of cold pressed juices to take care of our gut in summer.

Gut health has always been a central topic in the wellness sector, as it plays a critical role in our overall health. As a matter of fact, multiple studies have shown the relationship that there is between a healthy gut and mental health and vice-versa. Not by chance, our gut is increasingly being referred to being our “second brain”.

Gut health can in fact, affect our: immune response, skin, anxiety and stress levels, sleep patterns and food assimilation and digestion.

Celery Juice

This is our absolute favourite and a go-to every morning.

Often referred to as nature’s probiotic, celery juice is a fantastic way to kick start your morning.. In his book, Medical Medium Anthony Williams tells us that celery juice “is one of the most powerful and healing juices you can drink”. Celery is filled with vitamin A and C, folate, potassium, magnesium and sodium. Drinking on an empty stomach is said to aid digestion, relax the nerves, clear up skin, make you feel more awake.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Now, this one might not taste as delicious as celery juice, but your gut will thank you later!

Taking a shot (mixed with some water) of apple cider vinegar every morning, is a great way to help reset your gut for the rest of the day aiding better digestion.

ACV is made up from apples which have been fermented with naturally forming yeast and bacteria. It is said to have a detoxifying effect in the digestive system when the stomach is empty of food. Now, ACV does have a pretty strong taste so when diluting feel free to add it to a glass of herbal tea or add a squeeze of honey/lemon in it until you become used to the taste.

Swap fizzy drinks for Kombucha

It’s hot, and we want nothing more than a crisp, cold glass of something fizzy. But wait, what about the sugar? Well, thanks to Kombucha that problem has now been solved. What was once only available in certain cities and stores has now become a household staple. Kombucha is a fermented beverage that contains live cultures / microbes. With less than 5 grams of sugar, Kombucha is a more gut-friendly option compared to other popular sweetened beverages.
