3. Best restaurants

  • Cavalariça Comporta: My choice for a special dinner. Located in converted stables, with creative sharing plates and a beautiful, atmospheric interior. Book ahead.

  • Beef Bar at Sublime: Famous worldwide for steak and meat, enjoy high end smash burger as well, or signature pepper beef fillet with french fries, bao buns, wagu empanadas, striking salads and much more

  • Davvero at Sublime: Is there anything better than a good pizza, pasta or Italian signature dish? Book if you crave real and fresh Mediterranean food

  • Mesa Comporta: An appealing option for an intimate dinner in the village, especially when you want to dine somewhere with a more contemporary feel.

  • Almo Comporta: My pick for a slow breakfast, brunch or relaxed lunch in its lovely garden setting.

  • JNcQUOI Deli Comporta: A stylish all-day stop with Portuguese and Mediterranean food, bakery and delicatessen.

  • Canalha at Sublime: for carefully sourced Portuguese cooking, Sem Porta for a stylish hotel dinner, and Xtian at Vermelho Melides if you head south.

  • Sal comporta on the beach: Think sea view and fresh local fish

  • Sublime beach club: Think ocean views and local catch

4. The best shops and boutiques

Comporta is especially good for a very specific aesthetic: embroidered linen, artisan ceramics, wicker baskets, relaxed resortwear, antique-style furniture and beautifully simple home accessories.

  • Lavanda: Fashion, kaftans, baskets, lifestyle pieces. A must-visit.

  • Fashion Clinic: Best shop in town, sister shop of the original one in Lisbon, amazing homeware buys and woman and men impeccable fashion hits

  • The Life Juice: One of the area’s signature lifestyle stores, known for interiors and fashion.

  • Sublime shop: Flowing clothing, feminine resortwear and a bohemian spirit.

The nicest way to shop is simply to walk the small streets around Largo de São João and Rua do Comércio in Comporta village. Allow about two hours, including a coffee. Some concept stores, especially Casa da Cultura, are seasonal.

5. What to see and do beyond the beach

  • Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira: A remarkable old wooden fishing pier on stilts. Lovely for photography and a peaceful late-afternoon stop.

  • Sado Estuary Natural Reserve: Take a boat excursion for a chance to see wild dolphins and discover the beautiful wetlands.

  • Horse riding through the dunes

  • Other lovely activities include cycling quiet rural roads, exploring the rice fields, visiting Melides village, or booking a spa afternoon at Quinta da Comporta.

A memorable way to experience the landscape. Book with a local riding operator and check whether beach riding is permitted on your dates.

FINAL THOUGHTs

Few destinations manage to feel both entirely wild and effortlessly refined in equal measure: mornings cycling past quiet rice fields, slow afternoons on raw Atlantic shores, and long evenings spent in total, barefoot ease.
